SMURFIT-STONE LAUNCHES CONTRACT LABELING SERVICE

WITH MAJOR CONSUMER PACKAGED GOODS COMPANY

DI-NA-CAL® label group plays pivotal role in national product launch

for Procter & Gamble’s Downy® Simple Pleasures™ Fabric Softener

February 1, 2005 — Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation announced today its contract labeling services capabilities.  The company’s DI-NA-CAL® label group’s contract labeling services played a pivotal role in the national product launch of Procter & Gamble (P&G;) Company Downy® Simple Pleasures™ Fabric Softener, a new and innovative product that combines a traditional fabric softener with natural essential oils like lavender and vanilla.  Smurfit-Stone supplied P&G; with heat transfer labels, erected a high speed lab machine in house at the company’s Cincinnati, OH, plant, and applied Simple Pleasures labels to more than two million bottles.

“For this particular product launch, we not only provided our heat transfer labels for the package, we offered P&G; a host of other added-value contract labeling services which ultimately made us a more attractive supplier to launch this product than our competitors,” said DI-NA-CAL® label group Sales and Marketing Director Marty Dennis.

Smurfit-Stone’s contract labeling services include:

·         High-speed application equipment.

·         Heat transfer labels and equipment for filled and empty products.

·         Contract fulfillment services for liquid laundry containers with integrated pour spouts.

·         Contract label services for a variety of shapes and sizes of containers.

·         Contract label services for any quantity or number of customer SKU’s.

·         Technical support.

·         Superior graphic design for heat transfer labels.

To produce DI-NA-CAL® heat transfer labels, rotogravure printed graphics are delivered in roll form and transferred to plastic containers by automatic decorating machines. The result is a permanent label with the graphics capability to create a seamless look.  The company produces DI‑NA‑CAL® heat transfer labels at its Cincinnati, OH, and Jacksonville, FL, plants.

Smurfit-Stone’s label business is among the nation’s largest, and is a sales leader in the heat transfer label market.  Using state-of-the-art printing equipment, the group delivers high quality graphic reproduction, and various label application machines for inline production.  Smurfit-Stone’s label group is part of the company’s Consumer Packaging division, and provides integrated label solutions for a variety of industrial and consumer products companies.
