SMURFIT-STONE’S WEST POINT, VA MILL OPERATES ONE MILLION HOURS WITHOUT RECORDABLE INCIDENT
CHICAGO, February 20, 2006 — Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation today announced that employees at the company’s West Point, VA, containerboard mill have operated one million hours, or 40 weeks, without a recordable incident under Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) guidelines.
“Safety is our top operating priority. All of our employees should be proud of their efforts,” said Paul Hayes, general manager.
For the past four years, Smurfit-Stone has led the pulp and paper industry in safety, based on annual statistics compiled by the American Forest & Paper Association, the industry’s largest trade association.
One of the largest mills in North America, the West Point mill also has one of the best safety records in the pulp and paper business with an OSHA recordable case rate of 0.46 in 2005.
“Though the West Point mill ranked as one of the best safety performers within the company’s Containerboard Mill division, we’re constantly focused on ways to operate even safer,” said Hayes.
The mill annually produces approximately 840,000 tons of linerboard and corrugating medium, the components of corrugated containers. The mill has been in operation since 1914 and employs more than 600 people.
Smurfit-Stone is the largest producer of containerboard products in North America with 18 mills and three strategically located distribution warehouses for graphics grades. The company offers the most complete family of high-graphics containerboard products in the industry, including coated white top liner, bleached liner, premium white top liner and white top liner.
