SMURFIT-STONE ANNOUNCES INTERIM MANAGEMENT CHANGES
CHICAGO, January 20, 2006 – Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation announced today that Lane Hunter, senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Container division, is on indefinite medical leave.
An immediate successor to Hunter has not been named. On an interim basis, the sales and marketing function will be headed by a team consisting of John Riconosciuto, chief operating officer; Jim Nolan, vice president of corporate sales, strategic merchandising solutions and graphics; and the recently appointed vice presidents of sales, John Crimmin, Steve Jevyak, Bob Nelson, Tom Piggott and Don Roy. Bob Miller, vice president of international sales and marketing, will report to Jim Nolan. Don Petri, vice president and general manager of specialty/hybrid plants, will report to John Knudsen, senior vice president of manufacturing.
Riconosciuto stated, “We fully support Lane’s decision to devote all of his energies to managing his health. We are deeply indebted to Lane for his outstanding leadership and strategic contributions to the company, particularly his vision and leadership in launching our i2i business model.”
Jim Nolan will take on an expanded role in Container operations’ sales, assuming overall responsibility for corporate, i2i and graphics sales. Nolan will report directly to Riconosciuto. Nolan has spent more than 30 years in various positions of increasing responsibility in the corrugated business, and was promoted to his current role in December 2005.

I know Jim will provide the leadership that is needed to continue the strategic sales focus set forth by Lane in our Container operations and keep the momentum moving forward,” said Riconosciuto.
