Operations

JSC's Containerboard Mill division produces a full line of commodity and specialty paperboards for conversion into corrugated containers, folding cartons and related products. The company is the nation's largest producer of recycled medium and is the nation's sixth largest supplier of containerboard.

Building upon JSC's recycled and renewable raw materials base, JSC produces unbleached kraft linerboard grades and corrugating medium.

The containerboard operations include 2 kraft linerboard mills, 4 medium mills and 1 dedicated mottled white linerboard machine at the Brewton, AL, mill.

During 1997 the company completed a $54 million project to upgrade product quality and increase the output of its mottled white machine at Brewton. The Brewton machine is the industry's largest producer of this specialty product, known as MIST-WITE® II. It is a cost-effective alternative for high value graphics packaging.

JSC has a joint containerboard venture in China, Smurfit/CIMIC Holdings (SCH), which was established in July 1995. SCH has ownership in Nanyang Paper, a recycled linerboard producer in the Shanghai region.

In addition, JSC manages a Smurfit Packaging Corporation-owned linerboard machine located at JSC's Fernandina Beach, FL, mill and has a majority ownership position in a recycled medium mill in Groveton, NH.

Product Lines & End Use Markets

JSC containerboard mills produce a wide range of unbleached kraft linerboard grades, which provide high quality performance for both industrial and specialty applications. Medium, available in both semichemical and recycled grades, is produced in basis weights ranging from 26 pound to 40 pound.

MIST-WITE® II establishes the industry's highest standard of quality for this grade. This substrate's graphics flexibility and printability address an essential merchandising need within the consumer packaging and promotional market segments.
