The St. Laurent acquisition added four containerboard mills with 1.5 million tons of capacity to our holdings. Three of the mills are located in Canada in LaTuque and Matane, Quebec, and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The fourth is in the U.S., in West Point, Virginia. West Point is the largest of the four mills, with about 790,000 tons of annual output. LaTuque and West Point produce the highest-quality white top linerboard in North America. The combination of the unique, innovative, and value-added board substrates produced at St. Laurent's primary mills and the specialty converting capabilities of its corrugated container plants make it possible to offer original and cost-efficient packaging solutions to customers in both traditional and emerging packaging markets.
As a market leader, we are committed to the research and development of innovative, new products that create value for our customers and the ultimate consumers of our customers' products. With the acquisition of St. Laurent, we now have a significant presence in Canada as well as the U.S. Smurfit-Stone also holds a majority ownership position in a recycled medium mill in Groveton, New Hampshire, and is a joint owner of a recycled linerboard mill in China.
SSCC provides outstanding technical and customer service. Our service teams are dedicated to following every aspect of an order, from order entry to delivery, including on-site assistance for technical problems.
Our corrugated container operations furnish a full range of high-quality corrugated containers, designed to protect, ship, store, and display products and satisfy customers' merchandising and distribution needs. There is no such thing as a standard box. Each design is manufactured to unique customer specifications, whether the box will be used to ship refrigerators, vegetables, bicycles, computers, canned goods, or any of hundreds of thousands of other products. No other packaging material is used as universally as is corrugated.
Today, boxes do more than simply protect products. More and more customers are using boxes to advertise and sell their products, especially to warehouse stores. We have the most complete line of graphic capabilities in the industry, including flexo and litho preprint, colored and coated substrates, litho labels, and high-resolution post-print. Value-added services include mechanical packaging; custom packaging; a safe-transit, certified testing center; electronic data interchange; market research; and product development.
Our complete line of retail-ready, point-of-purchase (POP) displays help showcase our capabilities first, by creating and manufacturing the displays, and, then, by packing and shipping them to their final destinations. Among our specialty products are pizza boxes and corrugated clamshells for the food industry and custom, die-cut boxes to display packaged merchandise on the sales floor.
St. Laurent Paperboard Inc. (SLP) became part of Smurfit-Stone in the second quarter of 2000, bringing with it 17 packaging plants. St. Laurent, which was a manufacturer, supplier, and converter of high-quality, value-added packaging, served a diverse customer base in North America and selected international markets. Its specialty packaging facilities covered the gamut, from high-impact graphics, including mini-flute, to point-of-purchase displays. Six paper machines at our four coated recycled board (CRB) mills make a full range of grades in calipers from .014 to .040. All boxboard is made from 100-percent recycled fiber.
With the acquisition of St. Laurent, Smurfit-Stone is adding specialty capabilities. In addition to our Asitrade laminator/corrugator at Solon, Ohio, which produces high-quality, preprinted E-flute and F-flute corrugated packaging, we have additional microflute capabilities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Columbus, Ohio. We will add Asitrade/microflute capabilities in the Midwest and are considering adding them on the West Coast. SSCC is a joint owner of three corrugated container plants in China.
The company is a trusted supplier to hundreds of multi-plant national and international manufacturers, as well as thousands of local and regional customers. As part of our ongoing effort to keep our plants among the most environmentally sound and efficient in the industry, we continue to make sizable investments in modernization and other improvements.
