Containerboard & Corrugated Containers
Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation
consumer packaging business meets the needs of a wide variety of marketing,
manufacturing, and consumer companies. Those needs include folding cartons,
various grades of boxboard, printed paper, foil and heat transfer labels,
rotogravure cylinders and color separations, support services, full-service
design (structural and graphics), engineering services, electronic data
interchange, and research and development.
SSCC is one of the nation's largest suppliers of folding cartons,
which are used primarily to protect customers' products and to provide
point-of-purchase advertising. Our folding carton plants have extensive
converting capabilities, including sheet and web lithographic, rotogravure
and flexographic printing, laminating, and a full line of structural and
graphic design services. We produce a full range of carton styles, appropriate
to nearly all carton end uses. Converting capabilities include gluing,
tray forming, windowing, waxing, and laminating, plus other specialties.
Our customers are primarily consumer goods producers in packaged foods,
beverages, fast food, soap, paper, and, increasingly, pharmaceuticals
SSCC's recycled boxboard mills produce the broadest range of coated
recycled board (CRB) in the industry, as well as waxable and laminated
grades. The carton industry, a key market for boxboard, includes our own
facilities, which consume about two-thirds of the company's output. More
than $8 million has been invested in the Lafayette, Indiana, mill in the
past three years to improve quality and productivity.
products made with uncoated recycled board (URB) include electrostatic
disapative board (PROTECH®), recycled fiber drum stock, tube stock,
bending chip, and shoe boxboard.
The label group provides lithographic, pressure-sensitive, and heat-transfer
labels for decorative packaging operations. DI-NA-CAL®
is a proprietary labeling system that applies high-speed heat transfer
labels to plastic containers. Major recent investments streamlined the
finishing operations of our two litho-label plants and added stand-up
pouch capabilities to flexible packaging operations. Our customer base
includes consumer-branded and industrial product companies, ranging from
the food and personal care industries to automotive products.
Operations and Gravure Cylinders
Smurfit Graphics Arts (SGA) provides engraving of rotogravure printing
cylinders and color separating for lithographic, flexographic, and gravure
printing. SGA is well ahead of the industry in offering up-to-date scanning,
digital proofing, and a file-management system that allows customers to
store and review their electronic files.
Other unique and creative products produced by the Specialty Products

and lamination facilities are located in Elk Grove, Illinois; Commerce,
California; and Pointe Aux Trembles (PAT), Montreal. At the PAT plant,
a high-quality extrusion coater polycoats board for use in the food and
beverage industry, such as bacon board, drinking cups, and milk cartons.
