Smurfit-Stone Closes Sale of Stone Australia; Divestitures to Date Exceed $800 Million

CHICAGO, April 30, 1999 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) reported today that it had concluded the sale of Stone Container Australia Ltd. to Carter Holt Harvey Ltd. of New Zealand.

Smurfit-Stone sold Stone Australia as part of its program to focus on its core North American packaging business and divest of non-core assets. Since the divestiture program was begun last summer, the company has sold assets netting in excess of $800 million. The proceeds have been used to pay down debt.

Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation was formed on November 18, 1998 as a result of the merger of Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and Stone Container Corporation. The company is the industry’s leading manufacturer of paper and paperboard based packaging, including corrugated containers, folding cartons, and industrial bags. The company operates more than 300 facilities and employs 36,000.
