Smurfit-Stone Names Cynthia S. Bowers
Vice President, Compensation & Administration

CHICAGO, August 27, 1999 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) has named Cynthia S. Bowers vice president, compensation and administration. In this newly created post, she is responsible for developing and managing compensation and incentive plans, payroll administration, employee relocation and implementing a new payroll software program.

Bowers has been with the company for 12 years, most recently as head of the administrative team dealing with employees in transition as a result of the merger between Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (JSC) and Stone Container Corporation. Prior to the merger, she was director of compensation and benefits for JSC.

A St. Louis native, Bowers holds a BA in communications from Maryville University. Bowers will continue to be based in Clayton, MO.
