Smurfit-Stone Names Mark R. O'Bryan Vice President, Purchasing

CHICAGO, September 30, 1999 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) has named Mark R. O'Bryan vice president, purchasing. He will be based in Chicago and report to Ray M. Curran, president and chief executive officer.

O'Bryan joined Smurfit-Stone after 13 years with General Electric Corporation. For the past six years, he has held senior level positions in sourcing and materials management at several GE manufacturing businesses. Most recently, O'Bryan was manager of global materials and sourcing for GE Aircraft Engines in Evendale, OH. Prior to that, he held similar posts with GE Plastics in Pittsfield, MA, and a GE Power Systems operation in Florence, Italy.

His role at Smurfit-Stone will be to integrate and organize the sourcing and materials management activities for the company.

O'Bryan holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Dayton. He and his family will relocate to Chicago from the Cincinnati area.
