Smurfit-Stone Names Daniel J. Garand
Vice President, Supply Chain Operations

CHICAGO, October 21, 1999 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) has named Daniel J. Garand vice president, supply chain operations. He will be based in Chicago and report to Ray M. Curran, president and chief executive officer.

Garand joined Smurfit-Stone after nearly 30 years with AlliedSignal Corporation and Digital Equipment Company. For the past three years, he has held senior level positions in global supply chain management for AlliedSignal's Automotive Products Group in Morristown, NJ. Prior to that, Garand held a variety of corporate management positions in logistics, acquisitions and distribution during a 26-year career with Digital in Maynard, MA.

His role at Smurfit-Stone will be to bring current best practices in logistics and supply chain management to the company's integrated manufacturing system.
Garand holds a BS degree in management/marketing from New Hampshire College. He and his wife, Christina, will relocate to Chicago from the Boston area.
