Smurfit-Stone Names Edwin Goffard to Head Europa Carton

CHICAGO, July 13, 2000 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) has named Edwin Goffard chairman of the managing board and general manager of the corrugated division at the company's Europa Carton affiliate.

Goffard, vice president and corporate officer at Smurfit-Stone, replaces Dr. Jürgen Bruns, who is leaving the Hamburg, Germany-based subsidiary to pursue other interests. Dr. Bruns held the positions of chairman of the managing board, general manager of the corrugated division and works director. Effective immediately, Dr. Wilfried Zimmermann, CFO of Europa Carton, will take on the additional role of works director, a function responsible for human resources and labor relations.

Goffard joined Smurfit-Stone in May of 1999 and coordinated the integration process of the Jefferson Smurfit and Stone Container organizations, which merged in November of 1998. His primary responsibility was developing the company's synergy program. Prior to joining Smurfit-Stone, Goffard served as director of purchasing at the Pepsi-Cola Company for three years. He also spent seven years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company. Goffard and his family will relocate to Hamburg.

Dr. Bruns was promoted to the managing board of the corrugated division in 1979 and was named chairman of Europa Carton in 1990. The supervisory board of Europa Carton thanked Dr. Bruns for his 25 years of service and leadership.

Les Lederer, Smurfit-Stone vice president, will replace Goffard as a member of the supervisory board. Dr. Mueller, board member of the Dresdner Bank AG, will continue as chairman of the supervisory board of Europa Carton.
