Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation Announces
Retirement of Chief Operating Officer

CHICAGO, August 17, 2000 -- Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) announced today that Jay Gurandiano will retire effective September 1, 2000, from his positions of Chief Operating Officer and as a Director of the company for personal reasons. Gurandiano had joined Smurfit-Stone on June 1 of this year, upon the completion of Smurfit-Stone's acquisition of St. Laurent Paperboard Inc. Gurandiano had served as President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Laurent since its founding.

Commenting on Gurandiano's decision, Smurfit-Stone President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Curran said, "We are very disappointed that Jay has decided to retire because we had hoped that he would be a key part of our management team for many years. However, we certainly respect his decision and wish him the best of success in his future endeavors. We appreciate all of his efforts in seeing the St. Laurent transaction through to its completion."
