Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (U.S.) Reports 2000 Results

Chicago, February 1, 2001 — Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (U.S.) reported net income of $151 million in 2000, compared to net income of $272 million in 1999. The 1999 results include a $407 million pre-tax gain ($245 after-tax gain) on the sale of assets. Sales in 2000 were $3.9 billion compared to $3.4 billion in 1999.

Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (U.S.) is a wholly owned subsidiary of JSCE, Inc., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (NASDAQ:SSCC). The results of Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (U.S.) do not include any of the results of Stone Container Corporation.
